|RHistory:|N 711 AD the Moors conquered Gibraltar and strongly fortified the strategic peninsula. 1462 Spain succeeded to throw out the Moors, but during the Spanish civil war in 1704 it was conquered by Great Britain. Ever since than Spain have made several attempts to recapture Gibraltar, with no success.
After World War II the strategic importance of Gibraltar have decreased and Spain have made new attempts to recapture the peninsula in peaceful ways.
In 1967 a referendum was conducted on demand of the UN. 44% of the population voted for a reunion with Spain and 51% against. Instead Gibraltar received internal self-rule in 1969, and as a protest against that Spain closed the border. The border was not opened until 1985.
